Carey: Govt not rocked by O'Dea resignation

The Government Chief Whip Pat Carey has insisted the Government has not been rocked by the resignation of Willie O'Dea as Defence Minister.
Mr O'Dea resigned his Cabinet position last night after days of controversy surrounding his false sworn statement to the High Court.
His position eventually became untenable after those within Green Party ranks piled on the pressure and demanded his head.
Mr Carey said: "Arising from Willie O'Dea's own media interviews it became clear that it would become a distraction for him to continue in Government."
Meanwhile, the Labour Leader Eamon Gilmore has said the Coalition is divided and dysfunctional as a result of the affair and should not continue in government.
Mr Gilmore said: "The Government had tried to pull a stroke", and it had "backfired on them".
