Campaign highlights plight of undocumented young people in Ireland

There are calls for the Government to introduce a scheme which would facilitate undocumented young people to access immigration papers.

The call comes as a group from the Young, Paperless and Powerful campaign prepare to speak out at an event today to mark International Youth Day.

Edel McGinley, Director of the Migrant Rights Centre Ireland, explains the plight of undocumented young people in Ireland.

"We estimate that there's between 2,500 and 5,000 undocumented young people living in Ireland today, growing up in Ireland without papers," she said.

"Frankly it's an untenable situation and these young people have made Ireland their home, they've been in school here and very much embedded in our society.

"Today marks International Youth Day - young people are coming forward to share their life and their experiences and what it's like to live as an undocumented young person in Ireland."
