Calls for probes into Galway mother and baby home

There is a call for the State and the Gardaí to launch separate investigations into a mother and baby home in Galway beside which hundreds of infants were buried.

It is understood the remains of almost 800 babies and toddlers were buried inside a tank next to the institution in Tuam between 1925 and 1961.

Junior Minister Ciaran Cannon believes the Departments of Justice, Children and Education should be involved in examining how and why.

Minister Cannon also wants the Gardaí to investigate, saying that details "seem to indicate that children were very badly neglected" in the institution.
