Calls for inquiry after horse meat found in burgers
Farming and consumer groups have called for an inquiry after horse meat was found in beef burgers being sold in Irish supermarkets.
The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) detected the horse DNA during a survey of beef products sold by retailers, including Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Dunnes and Iceland.
In one case, burgers being sold in Tesco contained 29% horse meat.
Tesco has confirmed that burgers containing horse meat have also been sold at its stores in the UK - sparking food safety concerns there.
Here, the Irish producers who supplied the contaminated products have withdrawn them and have blamed imported ingredients from third-party sources.
The FSAI said that the horse meat does not pose a risk to public health, but raises concerns about traceability.
Dr Alan Reilly from the FSAI has called for closer monitoring.
"These particular products that we've purchased are bought from the freezer shelves," he said.
"They're the cheaper end of the market, and really, we have to look closer at the ingredients that are going into these separate products."
