Callely guilty of 'grave and serious' misrepresentation, Seanad Committee finds
The Seanad Committee investigating Ivor Callely's expenses has tonight recommended that he should be suspended from the Oireachtas for 20 sitting days without pay.
It found that Senator Callely intentionally misrepresented his normal place of residence, when he claimed thousands of euro in expenses from an address in Cork.
The committee said the breach was of a "grave and serious nature".
Senator Ivor Callely claimed more than €80,000 in expenses and mileage allowances from an address in West Cork, even though his family home and constituency office were in Dublin.
He told the Seanad Committee that he had done nothing wrong in claiming expenses from Cork.
Tonight, the committee, in a relatively hard-hitting report, stated that Senator Callely intentionally misrepresented his normal place of residence, and that he acted improperly and in bad faith.
It also noted the Senator's undertaking of last month, that if he was found to have acted improperly, he would pay back the money.
