Cabinet to debate Gender Recognition Bill

The Cabinet is expected to discuss legally recognising transgender people when it meets today.

The Gender Recognition Bill has been working its way through the Houses of the Oireachtas.

If it passes, it would amend a number of Acts to allow for passports and other civil registration documents to recognise a person's new gender - in the case where someone has chosen to change it.

Today's discussion between ministers follows the long running legal battle by Dr Lydia Foy and international coverage of Bruce Jenner's transformation into Caitlyn in recent days.
