Cabinet expected to approve senior Garda appointments

The Government is expected to fill a large number of senior Garda vacancies when the issue is discussed at today's Cabinet meeting.
Up to 51 priority posts, vacant since October last year, are expected to be given final approval.
They include the positions of assistant commissioner, chief superintendent, and superintendent.
None of the promotions have gone ahead because they need Government approval which has not been forthcoming.
Opposition parties have criticized the Minister for Justice Alan Shatter for failing the fill the vacancies, particularly when senior officers in the Anglo Irish Bank investigation have retired and not been replaced.
There has also been added pressure coming from the Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan who last week called for the promotions to be granted.
