Cabinet approves appointments to 33 senior Garda posts

07/02/2012 - 16:31:08
Justice Minister Alan Shatter has said the Garda Commissioner will proceed "with speed" to fill senior vacancies in the Force.

Thirty-three posts - at Assistant Commissioner, Chief Superintendent and Superintendent level - have been vacant since last year.

Two assistant commissioners, eight Chief Superintendents and 23 Superintendents are to be appointed after Cabinet approved the filling of the posts today.

Approval was also given to fill vacancies at Inspector and Sergeant level as a result of the upward promotions to fill the 33 posts.

Minister Shatter told the Dáil the posts should be filled quickly by the Garda Commissioner.

"I understand that he's going to now put in place the appropriate procedures for the making of the appointments," he said.

"I don't want to give an exact date, because it's a matter for him in the context of his managerial function of the Force, but I understand he will proceed with all appropriate speed in that regard."

Mr Shatter also said he would negotiate the filling of any other senior posts that may arise at the end of the month as a result of 300 early retirements within the Force.

"There will be other senior members of the Force who will retire on February 29. Their positions are the subject of conversations between myself and Minister (for Public Expenditure Brendan) Howlin. I expect there will be appropriate decisions made in that regard," the Minister said.
