Cabinet agrees wording for May's Marriage Equality referendum

The Cabinet has agreed to the wording of the Marriage Equality referendum.

Ministers signed off on the document at a special Cabinet meeting this morning.

Justice Minister Frances Fitzgerald will publish the wording in a statement in the coming hours.

While no firm date for the referendum has agreed, the coalition says it will take place in May alongside a poll on reducing the age of candidacy for the Presidency and the Carlow-Kilkenny by-election.

Minister Brendan Howlin says there is no room for complacency.

He said: "They don't change the Constitution without very careful consideration.

"So a very coherent case has to be made, and will be made by government, to make these two changes.

"And I hope the majority of people will support that view, but that's a matter that will unfold over the coming months."
