Bus Eireann drivers opt for strike action

Bus Eireann drivers have voted by a margin of 90% in favour of strike action from Sunday in a row with CIE over pay and conditions.

The company needs to make savings of €9m and has been in discussion with drivers, but those talks broke down last month.

The union is accusing management of trying to impose new conditions of employment from January 13.

Michael Faherty, General Secretary with the union representing drivers, the NBRU, has said they cannot afford to accept the new conditions.

Mr Faherty said: "If you take a situation where somnone is losing their shift allowance, that is exactly the same as reducing someone's basic wage by 17%.

"17% reduction in a week's wages, and remember we are talking here about workers who earn just about the average industrial wage."
