Burton: Noonan not trying to scare people
The Social Protection Minister has said that ratifying the Fiscal Treaty referendum will act as a "safety net" once Ireland exits it's current bailout programme.
Joan Burton's comments come as the Taoiseach denied that the Government has resorted to scare tactics in securing a Yes vote.
It is after the Finance Minister Michael Noonan today warned a 'NO' vote would lead to him having to deliver a dramatically tougher budget next December.
It has sparked a furious reaction from the No camp who accused Minister Noonan of bullying people with threats.
But Minister Burton says the Finance Minister wasn't trying to scare people, he was stating the facts:
"What he said was look if we don't have the follow on assurance of the access to the additional money as we emerge out into the international markets, the fact that we don't have it, even if we never needed to use it, could end up with us being marked down", she said.
"…to me that makes sense, I don't think he means so scare people".
