Burton has 'most challenging demands' of any minister

The government has committed to maintaining the basic, core social welfare rates.

That is according to Social Protection Minister Joan Burton who says the commitment was made last year along with a promise to reform the social welfare system.

However, speaking at an annual pre-budget forum, Minister Burton said she could offer no clarity on what core social welfare rates will be maintained.

“I can’t unfortunately clarify anything until I sit around a big table with the rest of my colleagues in the Cabinet and a collective agreement is taken in relation to the changes in social welfare," she said.

“From the Troika program of 2010, I have inherited the most challenging demand for any government minister, which is to find savings of €540m. I have to find those savings”
