Burton defends rehiring of retired public servants

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton

Social Protection Minister Joan Burton has insisted that public servants who have been rehired are not costing the taxpayer too much money.

Minister Burton made the comments after it emerged that 59 Department of Agriculture veterinary inspectors were rehired subsequent to their having availed of an early retirement scheme.

Minister Burton said pension payments are abated while the person is back at work, and the rehiring of staff is necessary in some important cases.

"In certain areas, for instance with teachers teaching Leaving Cert or other exam classes, specific arrangements were made in advance so that exam classes wouldn't be disrupted," she said.

"I think the Government has actually been able to deal with it very well.

"But obviously in some departments the loss of key personnel at very short notice has caused some difficulties."
