Jobs Minister Richard Bruton has said that the Government cannot clarify how much water meters will cost homeowners, until a decision has been taken by Cabinet on their implementation.
Minister Bruton was responding to weekend reports suggesting that meters would cost households around €300.
Under the terms of the EU/IMF deal the Government is obliged to introduce water charges by 2013.
But Minister Bruton says no decisions have been made as of yet.
"The Department of the Environment has yet to bring a proposal to Government," he said.
"It's only when we have a solid proposal and decisions are made that we will be in a position to clarify for people.
"People want to know what's going to happen but this is going to be a decision taken by Government and speculation ahead of that isn't particularly helpful."
