A major conference on the situation of the Roma community in Europe takes place in Brussels today.
It is estimated there are close on 3,000 Roma living in Ireland at present.
The successful integration of Roma emigrants remains a major challenge throughout the European Union.
Ciara Eustace of the EU office in Dublin said plans were in place to help improve the situation.
"All 28 EU states have agreed to recommendations on the integration of Roma populations under four priorities, which are education, employment, healthcare and housing," she said.
The main objective of the summit is to make these policies inclusive for all Roma at national level, including Ireland."
