Transport Minister Seamus Brennan is due to travel to Madrid this Thursday to study Spanish transport projects and particularly the Madrid metro system.

Mr Brennan said he intends to examine how major infrastructure projects can be built in Spain for a fraction of what they cost in Ireland and to explore if there may be ways to reduce the costs of Irish projects.

The minister admitted that the huge cost of construction projects in Ireland is becoming a major worry for his department.
