Brady defends role in child abuse cover-up

15/03/2010 - 07:00:07
Cardinal Sean Brady is defending his role in connection with an alleged cover-up of child abuse in the 1970s.

The Catholic Primate admitted he was at a meeting where children abused by convicted sex offender Fr Brendan Smyth were forced to take a vow of silence.

Cardinal Brady has said he didn't believe the incident was a "resigning matter".

One of the two victims in question is now suing Cardinal Brady in his personal capacity and as Primate of All Ireland.

Christine Buckley, a campaigner for survivors of abuse, has said the Pope should either resign in the wake of the latest scandal or at the very least, personally apologise to the victims.
