Boyd Barrett: Opposition to water charges 'absolutely enormous'

The Government is being warned that the opposition to water charges is going to be "enormous".

The Government is being warned that the opposition to water charges is going to be "enormous".

It emerged this week that homes will bear the brunt of the installation cost of water meters on top of usage charges.

Some Labour Party backbenchers are angry at the manner in which the announcement was handled by Environment Minister, Phil Hogan.

Richard Boyd Barrett, TD for the People Before Profit Alliance, has said the anger felt over the Household Charge should act as a warning for the Government.

Mr Boyd Barrett said: "The Government are at sixes and sevens, they are falling out with each other, because of the huge rebellion that has taken place against the Household Charge.

"They must know that if the rebellion against the Household Charge was significant, the rebellion against water charges is going to be absolutely enormous."
