A nine-year-old boy was recovering today after being injured in a hit and run accident in Co Down.

The boy was treated in hospital for bruising and shock after being struck by the car in Comber last night.

Police said a dark-coloured car, possibly a Vauxhall, approached a group of children in the Longlands Drive area of the town at around 8pm.

The children were uncertain about the male occupant and ran away.

When the driver of the car drove off he struck the nine-year-old, who had not been with the group of other children.

The PSNI appealed for anyone who witnessed the accident or saw such a car in the area at the time of the incident to contact them.
