A 13-year-old boy has died in Co Louth.

Gardaí said that his body had been recovered from a tank at a water treatment plant at Rosehall in Drogheda.

A search and rescue operation was launched after the boy was reported missing shortly before 4pm this afternoon involving the Gardaí, Coast Guard and emergency services.

It is believed he had been swimming with friends at the water treatment plant.

His body taken from the water by the Drogheda Coast Guard unit and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The boy's remains have been taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital, where a post mortem will be carried out.
