Bord Na Móna to open wind farm in Offaly

Bord Na Móna says its new wind farm at Mount Lucas in County Offaly will provide energy for more than 45,000 homes.

The €115m plant will be officially opened today by Minister for Energy and Natural Resources, Alex White.

However, groups concerned about wind energy say the facility will emit noise levels three times those recommended by the World Health Organisation.

Henry Fingleton of Wind Aware, says several communities across the country are taking legal action against wind farms.

Mr Fingleton said: "The amount of communities that are under duress from these wind farms is huge.

"Three quarters of all planning applications last year are now in the High Court and behind every one of these is an entire community under enormous pressure.

"They all have to raise €50,000 to raise their case, they are terrified about living under 160m turbines."
