Body recovered from base of cliff in Clare

The body of a man has been recovered from the base of a cliff in Co Clare, writes Pat Flynn.

The alarm was raised at around 5.10pm when the Irish Coast Guard received a report that a person had fallen from the Cliffs of Moher at Aill Na Searrach.

The Doolin Coast Guard unit was alerted and mobilised to investigate the report. Members of the Kilkee unit of the service were also requested to assist.

Volunteers set up their abseiling equipment to reach the base of the cliff while other members were able to make the ascent by an old goat track.

The entire recovery operation took over four hours and the body was finally recovered to the cliff top at 9.15pm.

The body is expected to removed to the morgue at University Hospital Limerick where a post mortem examination will take place today tomorrow.

Gardaí are investigating the circumstances of the tragedy.
