A body has been recovered after a car went over a cliff in Cork yesterday evening.

The Valentia Marine Rescue Sub Centre responded to a call from Cork gardaí at 7.30pm yesterday, after they were informed a car had gone over the cliff at the Old Head of Kinsale.

Valentia sent units from Kinsale, Courtmacsherry and the Rescue 117 helicopter from Waterford to the scene.

Their search was unsuccessful and the car was fully submerged in water.

This morning at around 3.20am the body of a man in his 60s was recovered after two lifeboats and a cliff team were sent to the scene.

A spokesperson for Valentia Rescue said the search was carried out by units from Kinsale, Courtmacsherry and the Old Head of Kinsale coast guard.

The family of the man were also in attendance when the coast guard returned to station.
