Bishops reiterate stem cell opposition ahead of EU vote

Ireland's bishops have reportedly reiterated their opposition to embryonic stem cell research ahead of a European Parliament vote on whether to fund such research.

Reports this morning said the bishops had reiterated their view that using undeveloped human embryos as a source of stem cells "is nothing short of the destruction of human life".

The bishops reportedly called on MEPs to provide funding instead for research on adult stem cells, which can be harvested from umbilical cords and bone marrow.

Experts believe there is some promise in using such cells, but embryonic stem cells provide much greater research opportunities.
