Bill proposes to legalise recreational use of cannabis

A Bill to allow recreational use of cannabis is to be published today.

Under Independent TD Luke 'Ming' Flanagan's Cannabis Regulation Bill, a new authority to regulate the sale and growth of cannabis would be established.

The bill would allow a person to legally grow up to six cannabis plants in their home, and to possess up to one ounce of the drug for personal use.

It would also permit 'cannabis social clubs' where members would be given cannabis for consumption in a pub-style setting on a not-for-profit basis.

TDs will vote on the bill in two weeks' time.
