A Co Kerry family who spoke at Leinster House this week on road safety say they are disappointed by the way they and other bereaved families were treated.

The Keanes, along with the Gallaghers from Mayo and the Farrens from Donegal, addressed the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Transport.

The three families lost their daughters in separate crashes.

Kay Keane alleges that only four of the 15 member committee attended the hearing. She says the families were disappointed by the committee chairman Frank Fahey, whom, they claimed did not allow them present key submissions.

Mr Fahey was not available for comment.

The three families are calling for a public inquiry into how local authorities maintain roads.

According to Mrs Keane, Deputy Fahey said the committee would ask the Departments of Transport and Environment as well as the National Roads Authority to address how crashes are investigated.

Mrs Keane says this was despite statements from the families saying they had already been told that no goverment body was responsible for such probes.
