Police in Belfast are investigating a small explosion in the city centre in the early hours of this morning.

Police in Belfast are investigating a small explosion in the city centre in the early hours of this morning.

It was reported to police a short time after a man dressed in black was spotted setting an object alight in the area of Chichester and Victoria streets.

Roads in the area were closed as a result of the alert.

On inspection authorities found an aerosol can had exploded in a rucksack, and no damage was caused.

Cordons were lifted at around 3 am, and investigations are continuing.
