There is speculation Barclay's Bank could be interested in buying MBNA.

Bank of America is shutting its credit card operations in Ireland and the UK, threatening 750 jobs in the Co Leitrim branch of MBNA.

Gerry Faughnan, president of the Carrick on Shannon Chamber of Commerce, said the UK high street bank could make a move for the MBNA business.

"Barclays are probably in the frame. I know they've already bought part of the MBNA loan book," he said.
