Banks to explain credit squeeze before Dáil committee

Ireland's four major banks have agreed to appear before the Oireachtas Finance Committee to explain why they are reducing access to credit and raising charges.

AIB, Bank of Ireland, Permanent TSB and Anglo-Irish Bank have accepted an invitation to appear before the committee next week.

In the Dáil today, Labour Party leader Eamon Gilmore accused banks of implementing less flexible lending policies in light of the economic downturn.

He said this would only make the situation worse by denying credit to people trying to start up businesses.
