Bangladesh: Ferry capsizes with 250 on board

A passenger ferry carrying hundreds of people has capsized in a river in Bangladesh, officials said today.

It happened as the boat was crossing the River Padma in Munshiganj district in the central part of the country, Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority chairman Samsuddoha Khondaker said.

Local media reports said up to 250 passengers were on board.

Mr Khondaker said few details about the cause of the accident were available and it was not known whether there were many survivors.

Ferry accidents are common in Bangladesh due to poor safety standards for the vessels, which are often overloaded.
