Austin Stack: Gerry Adams has more information and has not shared it with Gardaí

A stand-off between the son of a murdered prison officer and the Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams has taken a new turn.

Austin Stack - whose father Brian was murdered by the IRA - claims Gerry Adams has more information that he has not given to the Gardaí.

Austin Stack claims he and Mr Adams met with an IRA leader who said he knew the names of his father's killers.

Mr Stack claims the Sinn Féin President has failed to pass the name of the man they met to Gardaí.

"He is a public representative, has a duty as a citizen and a duty to myself and my family…to now hand that information over to An Garda Síochána," he said.

It is reported that, in an email to Garda Commissioner Noirin O Sullivan in recent months, Mr Adams provided the names of four senior IRA members who may have information about the 1983 murder of prison officer Brian Stack. He said Austin Stack gave him the names, which Mr Stack denies.

Mr Stack - who is the only prison officer to have been murdered in the Republic during the Troubles - was shot in 1983 while working as a prison officer at Portlaoise prison, but did not die until the following year.

While the provisional IRA denied its involvement for 30 years, senior members admitted responsibility for the shooting during a meeting with Austin Stack in 2003 which was organised by Mr Adams.

Taoiseach Enda Kenny last week called on Mr Adams to clarify who gave him the names of four senior provisional IRA members who may have been involved in the 1983 murder.
