ATM users warned about new scam

ATM users are being warned about a worrying new scam.

It involves thieves placing a device in the machine's slot which traps the victim's card inside.

The Irish Payment Services Organisation says criminals are particularly targeting older and vulnerable people.

"The criminal usually hangs around the ATM to see the person keying in their pin," said IPSO's Una Dillon.

"The person realises that their card isn't coming out after they have carried out a cash withdrawal, and then the criminal will approach them and say 'oh that has happened me before I'll help you'

"What they do is they pretend they're taking the card back out of the machine but they actually hand back the person a substitute card."
