The centre of Athlone is being evacuated this evening following an explosion.

The centre of Athlone is being evacuated this evening following an explosion, which gardaí believe may have been caused by a gas blast.

Castlemaine Street is closed.

Two premises - a public house and an auctioneers - are on fire, and emergency services are at the scene.

People have been moved out of other premises in the immediate vicinity.

There are no reports of any injuries, but motorists and pedestrians are being advised to avoid the area.

Traffic diversions are in place.
