Army makes safe unstable chemical in Cork school

An Army Bomb Disposal Team made safe a quantity of the unstable chemical Dinitrophenylhydrazine this evening in Douglas, Cork.

The Defence Forces deployed the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team to Christ the King Secondary School, Douglas, following a request from the gardaí.

The team arrived on scene at 4pm and made safe the unstable chemical which was found in a school laboratory during a routine audit.

The chemical was removed to a safe location where it was made safe through the use of a controlled explosion. The scene was declared safe at 4.35pm and the team returned to base.

Dinitrophenylhydrazine is a chemical re-agent routinely used in laboratories around the country that can become unstable over time.

Other types of callouts for EOD teams would include improvised explosive devices, conventional munition destruction such as old artillery shells discovered by members of the public, and also suspect devices found to be hoaxes.
