There were dramatic scenes in Cork city centre this afternoon as armed gardaí were involved in the arrest of two men on a busy pedestrian street.
Gardaí stopped two men on Oliver Plunkett St, near its junction with the Grand Parade, at around 3.20pm to search them under the drugs act.
However, while one of the men complied, the other man refused to cooperate with gardaí.
Garda units on the ground requested backup and members of the armed Regional Support Unit arrived on the scene within minutes, along with other garda units.
As dozens of shoppers looked on, the man was subdued quickly.
Both men were arrested at the scene and were taken to the Bridewell Garda Station where they are still being detained.
One onlooker said despite the aggression from one of the suspects, gardaí acted very calmly and handled the situation very well.
