Gardaí in Co Limerick are investigating an armed robbery at a petrol station last night during which a number of shots were fired and a woman was forced from her car at knifepoint.

The woman was sitting in her car on Main Street in Foynes shortly before 11pm when a man with a knife forced her from the vehicle and led her into the forecourt shop, where at least three people were working at the time.

Another two raiders arrived on the scene armed with a single-barrelled shotgun and a pump-action shotgun.

At least two shots were fired before the raiders, who are all believed to have been foreign nationals, emptied the tills and fled the scene on foot.

Nobody was injured during the shooting.

Gardaí have sealed off the area for forensic examination today and say their investigation is still at an early stage.
