Anti-racism training needed by Gardaí and immigration services, study claims
Gardaí and the Immigration services are being singled out as in need of anti-racism training, following a new study.
The Immigrant Council of Ireland interviewed 40 young men aged 16-28 who were born outside the EU, and live here.
The men identified discrimination in school, sport, at work and by public authorities.
Peter Slowak is policy and research officer with the Immigrant Council, he carried out the study.
"Some would say, 'oh I have great Irish friends, the people are very welcoming'," said Mr Slowak.
"But on the other hand, people would also say on the street, 'oh go back to your country'. There are Muslim guys who were given ' jokes' like, 'do you have a bomb in your bag?' which really hurts them. And unfortunately in some areas they also experience assaults and physical violence."
