St Stephen's Day is traditionally a day when enthusiasts around the country engage in the sport.

ARAN, an animal rights group, is calling on the Taoiseach Enda Kenny to stamp out what it calls a "barbaric" form of entertainment.

Spokesperson John Carmody said: "In 2015, ARAN will be putting more resources into place to press for this very cruel and vicious form of a bloodsport to be outlawed.

"It's outlawed in the UK. We've got no reason for it to continue in this country, considering how cruel and barbaric it tends to be."
