Amnesty 'very concerned' about Ireland's abortion laws
Amnesty International has warned that until Ireland's laws allow for abortion in certain circumstances, this country will be out of line with international human rights standards.
The human rights organisation has launched its annual report today into the state of human rights in 159 countries around the world, including Ireland.
The report highlights the plight of the growing numbers of people displaced by conflict, especially in Syria.
However, Executive director of Amnesty International Colm O'Gorman, said Ireland has a lot of work to do in terms of women's rights particularly in relation to Ireland's proposed abortion legislation.
He said: "We are also very concerned at a proposed 14-year sentence for a woman who obtains an abortion or for a doctor who provides one in certain circumstances, that really does need to be revoked.
"Above all, the report notes that until Ireland's laws allow for abortion in cases of rape and incest, risk to a woman's health or cases of fatal foetal abnormality, they will be out of line with international human rights standards."
