American billionaire threatens legal action against Clare County Council

American billionaire Donald Trump has threatened Clare County Council with legal action, after it issued a planning enforcement order against his company.

The order was issued after Mr Trump tried to carry out unauthorised works at Doonbeg hotel and golf course, which he bought in February.

Mr Trump brought rock armour on site to strengthen defences against coastal erosion - a move the council says could cause more damage than it prevents.

The Irish Times Environment Editor Frank McDonald says environmental concerns about an endangered snail are also holding up Trump's plans.
