Almost 500 motorists were arrested for drink-driving over the bank holiday weekend, according to figures released by the Gardaí.

The figures show a total of 479 motorists were detained for the offence between March 16 and 19.

This equates to 120 per day and would appear to indicate that drink-driving remains a major problem on Ireland's roads, despite the introduction of mandatory breath-testing,

The Gardaí say they will continue to crack down on motorists who flout the law and are warning that anyone who thinks they can get away with drink-driving will eventually be caught at a random checkpoint.
