Allegations of clerical sex abuse revealed in Kerry
28/10/2005 - 13:25:01The Bishop of Kerry Dr Bill Murphy has confirmed there have been 11 allegations relating to the sexual abuse of children by members of the clergy in Kerry since 1955.
He also said that a total of €260,000 has been paid to settle three of these cases and only one of the priests was convicted and served a prison sentence.
In a letter to be read at all masses this weekend, Bishop Murphy assures anyone who wishes to come forward and tell their story that they will be listened to with care and sensitivity.
He said that a child care committee has been established in the diocese, and anyone wanting to report an instance of child sexual abuse can do so in the knowledge that their complaint will be passed on to the Gardaí.
