Alex White to announce bid for Labour leadership

Alex White is expected to announce his bid for the leadership of the Labour Party later.

The junior health minister will face off against Joan Burton, while a series of other TDs are still considering running for Deputy Leader.

Alex White will address the media at 11 this morning – not on the Plinth at Leinster House, but on the Rosie Hackett Bridge.

The new Luas and pedestrian bridge in Dublin is named after a famous trade unionist, and therefore likely to be hugely symbolic of the image that Alex White, a barrister from South Dublin, will want to portray.

Joan Burton had a huge crowd of supporters behind her when she launched her bid, and observers will be watching closely to see how many Labour TDs or Senators will openly back Alex White's bid today.

Meanwhile, at least three TDs are considering running for Deputy Leader, a position for which there are already three contenders.

Sean Sherlock, Alan Kelly and Michael McCarthy are already running, and they could yet be joined by Dominic Hannigan, Ciara Conway, and Arthur Spring.
