Adams: Taoiseach must act in national interest

03/12/2011 - 15:12:20
Sinn Féin President Gerry Adams said today that the Taoiseach needs to start acting in the national interest.

Deputy Adams said that it is time Enda Kenny makes it clear to other European Leaders that Ireland is not interested in fiscal unity or centralised budget controls in the EU.

His comments come after the German Chancellor and the French President agreed yesterday that changes to the EU treaties are needed in order to ensure the survival of the euro currency.

Deputy Adams believes that it is vital that the Taoiseach does not give into these pressures, for the sake of the Irish economy.

"The Taoiseach needs to make it clear, and we wish him well if he makes it clear, that we will not stand for any further loss of any fiscal authority or control, that he's against the centralisation of that and the emergence of this two-tier European state, led by the German Chancellor and the French President," said Deputy Adams.

"And if, as they have said, there's going to be treaty change, then there needs to be a referendum."
