Adams: SF may support presidential candidate, but not field one on party ticket

13/09/2011 - 13:17:40
The Sinn Féin leader Gerry Adams has said that if Sinn Féin decides to contest the Presidency, the candidate will not run on a party ticket.

The party's Ard Comhairle is expected to meet this weekend where the leadership will recommend supporting a candidate.

"The person would be supported by Sinn Féin, and hopefully by others, but would not be there as a Sinn Féin candidate," Gerry Adams said today.

Among the possible frontrunners are Deputy First Minister Martin McGuinness and former Stormont Agriculture Minister Michelle Gildernew.

Gerry Adams said Mary McAleese had set a very high standard, and that any candidate would have to be a truly national figure.
