Accused claims he 'told the others to leave' Dale Creighton alone, murder trial hears

One of seven people accused of murdering a man on a footbridge in Dublin claims he tried to help him and left when things started getting out of hand.

Dale Creighton died in hospital on January 2, 2014, after being subjected to what the prosecution described as a “vicious, prolonged and sustained attack”.

David Burke, who is from Tallaght but lives at Beechpark in Collinstown, Co. Westmeath, told Gardaí he rang in 2014 at The Plaza nightclub in Tallaght.

Afterwards, he said he chased Dale Creighton along the Tallaght bypass after he heard his sister screaming that her phone and bag had been stolen.

He said he backed off when Mr Creighton pulled a large kitchen knife on him, but followed him to the footbridge where three other men were holding him.

Others arrived, he said, and there were up to 10 people on the bridge at one stage.

He said he believed Dale did not have the phone and told the others to leave him alone, and while he admitted picking him off the floor, he repeatedly denied hitting him.

He said he did not want anything to do with it and went to his mother's house when things started getting out of control.

He, along with six others including his sister Aisling, deny murdering the 20-year-old.
