Tribunal 'cannot accept' Haughey knew little of finances19/12/2006 - 14:04:48
The Moriarty Tribunal has rejected the late Charles Haughey's claims that he knew little about his personal finances.
The former Taoiseach told the tribunal that he knew nothing about his finances and left them solely in the hands of his late accountant, Des Traynor.
However, in a report out today, the tribunal says these claims are not believable.
It says the former Taoiseach, who died in June, lived a lavish lifestyle between 1979 and 1996 and was spending vastly more money than his apparent income.
"The tribunal cannot accept the testimony given by Mr Haughey to the effect that he knew virtually nothing of his financial arrangements and left these matters to Mr Traynor," the report says.
