70,000 mortgages already restructured, says banking federation

The Irish Banking Federation has defended itself against accusations that banks are not trying to help those in mortgage arrears.

Chief executive of the Irish Banking Federation Pat Farrell, speaking to Kfm, said: "Over 70,000 mortgages have been restructured because banks have engaged with their customers where they are in difficulty.

"Far from not engaging with customers and not taking responsibility, (banks) are taking their responsibilities very seriously."

Mr Farrell's comments came as the Government prepares to discuss the contents of the Keane report on the mortgage crisis.

It is believed the report will recommend a version of debt forgiveness in certain circumstances.
