€68m fund for new local authority housing

A €68m fund has been announced by the housing minister Jan O’Sullivan to build new local authority houses, with the four councils in Dublin set to receive over €21.5m.

The Minster was in Darndale, Dublin this morning, which will receive a €7.9 million euro investment to build 35 new homes (approximately €225,000 each).

There is also a €15m fund that will see vacant council houses refurbished to help clear the backlog.

Minister O’Sullivan said this is the start of what will, hopefully, be a bigger programme.

"I will be making a case to continue with the construction of local authority housing, because we have a huge demand - there is a need, particularly in the Dublin area.

"We hope this will make a difference."

The entire €68m project will see 449 new homes built over the next two years.
