The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade issued more than 620,000 passports last year.

May and June were the busiest months for passport applications while the Department's offices in London and Canberra issued the greatest numbers of passports.

New York, Sydney, San Francisco and Ottawa also experienced a high demand.

More than 460,000 applications were made through Passport Express - a 3.3% increase over 2013's figures.
